‘T Nieuwe Diep Amsterdam
Hidden deep in the Flevo Park is a distillery that is shrouded in as much mystery as its location. It is a distillery with a history of defiance and an absolute unique way of doing things. Just a 20 minutes bike ride from Dutch Courage Cocktailbar and one feels as though we are in the country side. We have arrived at ‘T Nieuwe Diep.

The Martinez is one of the most important classic cocktails at Dutch Courage Cocktailbar. The cocktail itself is the “missing link” between Whisky and gin, the same way that Genever itself is the missing link between these two spirit categories from a flavour stand point. And, similar to genever, this cocktail, too, is often overlooked and underestimated. But once it is enjoyed in the correct preparation, it is quite the enjoyable drink.

On Lange Haven number 74 we find the one and only Jenever Museum of the Netherlands. It houses a staggering amount of history, advertising, knowledge and production of this ancient spirit.

Personal top 10 purchases in a liquor store-PRICE NO LIMIT
After i shared my tips on Genever purchases under 30 euro, now it is time to break the seal on the fancy stuff. Awesome tasting products where money plays no role. Although genever has insane production value at the time of writing, matched only by Sherry perhaps there are a few luxury products there. However, compared to most other aged spirits, the prices are still very fair, and productions are in most cases truly limited.

I often get asked for tips on purchasing genever in liquor stores when in the Netherlands. As i do not own a liquor store this is often a difficult question, as i am not too aware of the assortment of the average one. Why not change that? For this list i was not paid in any way for my suggestions. So it is based purely on my own experience and taste. That experience however is built on having tasted virtually all genever on the market, and having purchased spirits for bars for over twenty years. So, you know, it is not completely idiotic.
